CANON POINT: Unworthy Thor issue 3, after being shot by the Collector
BACKGROUND: History
PERSONALITY:Thor of legend is the greatest warrior of Asgard and the embodiment of all the values which that culture cherishes. He can fight for weeks on end without tiring and follow it up by feasting and revelling for a solid month. He lives for the day, he is honourable and brave and considers his own safety of little importance next to the safety of those he has sworn to protect.
In his youth he was rash and hot-headed due to his pride or unwillingness to see evil triumph, but after being banished to Earth to learn humility, he cooled his temper and learned to pause and assess a situation before rushing into it. As he grew in might, he grew in wisdom- and defended both Earth and Asgard from numerous foes. He holds back when fighting human foes, because his great strength would easily overwhelm them and he knows it is not his place to impose his will upon humans. But when fighting cosmic threats he shows little mercy.
Thor's honour and name, in keeping with Asgardian values, have been as important to him as strength of arms. When a friend, Tony Stark, used Thor's DNA to create a machine which impersonated him and caused havoc, Thor made sure to track Stark down and impress on him that Thor would not allow such a thing to happen again. Without his good name, Thor is nothing.
All would agree: Thor has been honourable, strong, brave, just, selfless, true to his friends, unwavering in his dedication to fighting evil and thwarting all those who mean harm to Asgard and Earth. But above and beyond all such superlatives and adjectives is one word which described the Thor of legend, one which summed his character and traits, the title which allowed him to carry the enchanted Uru hammer: worthy.
But Odinson is worthy no longer, and can no longer lift Mjolnir.
Odinson has spent his whole life in pursuit of worthiness. As a boy he trained with the desire to become able to lift the hammer, to satisfy his pride and prove that he was the greatest warrior and son of Asgard. He achieved this, and all Asgard knew of his accomplishment. But as he grew, as years passed with Mjolnir at his side, as he fought on Earth and eventually came to love it as much as he loved Asgard, worthiness became his identity rather than a means to access his weapon. He was Thor the Worthy, and the title was both a challenge to hold himself to highest standards of behaviour and a reassurance that he was doing the right thing.
When he came to Oska, Odinson was unsure of who or what he was. He lived in doubt for a long time. He questioned himself and lacked the confidence which Thor of legend exuded. But he has changed. While he is not the outwardly heroic and outgoing god he had once been, he is more confident of himself. Going on the missions with the Audentes and fighting alongside his teammates- most of whom did not know him as Thor- has restored his faith in his ability to fight for what is right. He has regained a sense of himself without Mjolnir.
This development has come to the point where he found a Mjolnir and was able to contemplate his growth and decide not to take her for himself.
He still has bouts of melancholy, still is not wholly pleased with himself and who is he, but it can be said he more at peace with himself than not. When he fights it's still with pride, but no longer is he reckless with himself. There's no need to prove his prowess to his teammates or his enemies. (Of course he still strives to win each fight, to prove that he is a warrior to be feared; physical prowess and strength of arms shows how great a man is!) Emotionally, he is more serious than not- but the hints of his past personality, one who loved to celebrate and enjoyed a joke as much as anyone else, is slowly returning. Life can still be enjoyed without Mjonlir, apparently.
Coming into season 2, Odinson is a man in the middle of a journey. He is unworthy, but he can live with it. He knows himself to be a fighter, loyal to his friends and especially to his brother. He believes that fighting for life and goodness is important. Where before, as Thor, he had fought for good not only because it was good but also with a fear that he had to do so to hold Mjolnir- now he does not have that hanging over his head. That is something he will need to process.
ABILITIES:
Thor's abilities fall into two categories- those he has because of his Asgardian/Elder God physiology, and those he has because of his position as God of X.
ASGARDIAN TRAITS
durability Being half Asgardian, half elder God from his mother's side, Thor is tougher even than the normally tough Asgardians. His skin/bone/etc are denser than a humans, making him weigh around 640 pounds and allowing a lot of his other physical traits: This physical toughness makes him invulnerable to many physical and magical blows, falls from great heights, and other explosions or impacts. This also makes him immune to most diseases and toxins, is not affected by extreme temperatures, asphyxiation, fire, radiation. He does not need food, sleep, or oxygen to survive, and has fought in space with no adverse effects. He is not immune to being damaged, and will sustain injury over time.
strength Thor is the strongest of the Asgardian gods. He can lift weight equalling several million tons, crush uru, and keep up with the Hulk fighting for over an hour.
speed Thor can move at extremely high speeds. He can spin fast enough to create a tornado, for example. He cannot move at light speed himself.
senses He can see things as far out at the edge of the solar system, moving up to the speed of light. He can hear cries from another planet. He does not have supernatural magical or mystical senses.
stamina Thor can go months without sleep with only a small effect to his abilities. He can exert himself at peak capacity for months.
accelerated healing When injured he heals much faster than regular humans. He can heal broken wrists in a matter of hours, for example. He cannot regrow lost limbs.
longevity While not immortal, Thor ages at a rate far slower than humans. He is several thousand years old.
all tongue This is a language which Asgardians can speak, which allows listeners to hear Thor speaking in their own native language. It allows Thor to understand any language being spoken as well.
OTHER ABILITIES
weather manipulation Thor is able to summon lightning, thunder, and storms, and control those which are naturally formed. He has done this even in places where such weather would not usually form, such as in space or in a desert. This can be at the mercy of his emotions while he is unworthy.
energy manipulation Thor can project energy blasts. He usually relies on Mjolnir for this, so his own abilities are underdeveloped. Without Mjolnir he is more vulnerable to these kinds of attacks, especially magical ones.
earth control As the child of Gaea the Earth mother, Thor can control the very earth and rock on the planet earth. He has created a huge chasm, can make earthquakes, and control landslides. If ever on planet Earth, Thor would have this ability- it would not affect the earth of other planets.
combat experience Thor has been raised since birth to fight. He's proficient with most weapons, both ranged and melee, as well as wrestling. He's a master tactician of both dueling and wars.
intellect Thor has some medical knowledge, due to his time sharing a body with Donald Blake. He is an avid reader, and has extensive knowledge about the universe and fields which extend beyond fighting. This has surprised people who assume him to be a brainless lump of muscle.
warrior's madness This is an ability which allows Thor to double his strength and stamina, but at the cost of his sanity. He goes into a rage and becomes unable to control his actions. He is forbidden to use this ability on pain of exile, and it is called the unpardonable sin.

CANON POINT: Unworthy Thor issue 3, after being shot by the Collector
BACKGROUND: History
In Unworthy Thor- Odinson has heard of another hammer and gone to Asgard to seek it out. He's filled with self-loathing, but has his hopes pinned on finding another Mjolnir. He does not find Asgard -instead discovering his friend Beta Ray Bill, who explains that the Collector has taken Asgard. Bill wields a hammer which is the twin of Mjolnir's, and he offers it to Odinson. Odinson refuses.
The two are captured and brought to the Collector, who explains that the second hammer did come to Asgard. He wants the hammer but could not touch it, so took the whole of Asgard under the hammer. He demands that Odinson tell him the secret to wielding it, to which Odinson replies that there is no secret: one must be worthy. The Collector threatens to shoot a child, the last living member of its race unless Odinson tells him. Odinson can do nothing but watch and protest as the child is shot. The Collector shoots him as well and has him imprisoned.
Odinson spends the next few months breaking out of his cage daily and fighting hordes of the Collector's minions in his mad attempt to reach the hammer. Each day he fails, until one day Bill stands before him, having escaped and found his own hammer- Odinson, however, is taken with Warrior's Madness at this point and attempts to kill him, as he is blind to everything but his pursuit for the hammer and fears that Bill will take it. He almost kills Bill.
He is stopped by three others- a shadowed figure and two women working for Thanos who also are looking for the hammer. When they do not find it, they leave. Odinson collects himself, apologises, and prepares for a final attempt to retrieve the hammer himself.

But above and beyond all such superlatives and adjectives is one word which described the Thor of legend, one which summed his character and traits, the title which allowed him to carry the enchanted Uru hammer: worthy.
But Odinson is worthy no longer, and can no longer lift Mjolnir.
The details of what caused the Odinson to become unworthy aren't yet known, not even to himself. They don't need to be to see the effects the change has had on his character.
Now proved unworthy, now having lost the foundation on which he has built his life, now having lost the hammer to a worthier warrior, Odinson is unsure of who or what he is. He is only sure of one thing: he is unworthy, perhaps never was, and will doubtless never be worthy again. He is not the god he once was, and he does not believe he can be again. He has given up the name Thor, calling himself Odinson instead. It is his heritage which affords him what he has, nothing that he himself has done.
Previously assured of his every action, Odinson now lives in doubt. He questions himself and lacks the confidence which Thor of legend exuded. He has dealt with neither the pain or grief of losing Mjolnir, and is haunted by the knowledge that he is no longer what he was. He questions his friendships, certain that he cannot be enough for the great friends which Thor had made. Since losing his hammer Odinson has not slept- afraid of the dreams he would have. He fears that his loss of worthiness was actually a good thing, and that the universe is better without Thor there to protect it.
He is still proud, between his bouts of melancholy and self-loathing. He strives to win each fight, to prove that he is a warrior to be fearer (though whether it is himself or his enemies he is trying to convince, who can tell). In this his Asgardian heritage shows, where physical prowess and strength of arms shows how great a man is. He fights desperately now, without holding back any of his power- partly because he no longer wishes to. Previously he held back because he did not wish to kill other simple because he was stronger, now he would welcome that. Also- he is afraid that he is not strong enough, and so uses all his power to avoid being bested.
Yet- despite his conviction that he is unworthy, despite his self-loathing and despair, Thor has shown he'll do anything to get his hands on Mjolnir again. He cannot take his own hammer, as she has a new Thor wielding her, but the second he hears of another hammer he goes to find it instantly. Odinson believes that without the hammer, he cannot be himself. He has tied his sense of self and identity so deeply with the hammer and with the concept of worthiness, that having lost one he feels he has lost all of himself. Whether this is true or not- what Thor is/can be without the hammer is something he still has to discover for himself.

Thor's abilities fall into two categories- those he has because of his Asgardian/Elder God physiology, and those he has because of his position as God of X.
